In a direct evolution from campaign vitriol to criminality, a Florida man's intemperate threats have culminated in a prison sentence. A St. Petersburg political aspirant, William Robert Braddock, III, aged 41, has been sentenced to three years in federal penitentiary for interstate transmission of a threat to injure. On February 3, Braddock had entered a plea of guilty to the charges, as disclosed in court documents.
Delving into the narrative of this case, Braddock and an unnamed Victim-1, identified as the Republican party frontrunner, were locked into a fractious battle for the 13th Congressional District of Florida. The victim was perceived by Braddock as a crucial hurdle in his electoral ambitions, a sentiment that brewed into a brazen threat during a phone conversation with Victim-2, an acquaintance of Victim-1. According to a statement obtained by the U.S. Department of Justice, Braddock explicitly threatened, "I will be the next congressman for this District. Period. End of discussion. And anybody going up against me is f---ing [expletive] ignorant for doing so. [Victim-1]’s ignorant so I don’t have a problem taking her out, but I’m not going to do that dirty work myself obviously."
The toxic rhetoric transcended verbal threats when Braddock alluded to enlisting a "Russian-Ukrainian hit squad" to ensure that his rival, Victim-1, would "disappear" should she sustain her lead in the polls. Such was the level of his invective that it merited federal investigation and ensuing charges. After the incident, Braddock reportedly fled to Thailand, later settling in the Philippines, until his surrender to the authorities in Manila and subsequent extradition to the United States.
Various law enforcement agencies, including the FBI Tampa Division, the St. Petersburg Police Department, and the U.S. Marshals Service played pivotal roles in apprehending Braddock. The case also saw substantial international cooperation with the Philippine Department of Justice, the Philippine Bureau of Immigration, and the Manila Office of the Legal Attaché.
