Michael Gargiulo, a convicted serial killer facing the death penalty in California, made his initial court appearance today in the Skokie Courthouse, reported Cook County Sheriff's Office. At 48 years old, Gargiulo stands accused of the 1993 murder of Tricia Pacaccio, an 18-year-old from Glenview. The case, which remained unsolved for over a decade, resurfaced more than 13 years after Gargiulo was first charged with Pacaccio's killing – the charge dates back, but it's the courthouse today that sees Gargiulo face the long shadow of justice.

Sheriff Dart underscored the significance of the latest development, stating, “The arrest and prosecution of Michael Gargiulo marks a crucial moment in our pursuit of justice for Tricia Pacaccio.” He recognized the ongoing pain of the loss for Pacaccio's loved ones and committed to supporting her family as the case advances. Tricia Pacaccio, a recent high school graduate at the time of her death, was found stabbed to death on her family's doorstep, a crime that remained a mystery until Sheriff's Police Detectives linked Gargiulo to DNA material found under her fingernails in 2003; however, charges weren't approved until later.

Gargiulo's past caught up with him following his 2008 arrest in California where he was later sentenced for a string of violent attacks, including two murders and an attempted murder. His 2019 conviction and subsequent death sentence in 2021 for those crimes have led him back to Illinois to answer for the 1993 murder, with the most recent court proceedings commencing with his extradition and today's appearance at the Skokie Courthouse, his next court date is set for September 20.
