A Michigan State Police trooper, who sustained injuries in a shootout during a traffic stop on Friday evening, has been released from the hospital, according to state police. The incident occurred on Wyoming Street, west of Highland Park, when a confrontation between the trooper and a 41-year-old Highland Park man escalated to gunfire. In a release provided by FOX 2 Detroit, the trooper was reportedly shot but is expected to survive.
The violent exchange that took place resulted in the trooper being shot three times, yet his life was spared largely due to his bulletproof vest. State police shared at 2:23 p.m. yesterday, as reported by MLive, that the trooper was released and expressed gratitude towards the medical staff at Sinai Grace Hospital for their care. He sustained two shots to his vest and one to the shoulder during the altercation which erupted at approximately 7:50 p.m. on Friday.
Upon returning fire, the trooper fatally wounded the assailant, who was pronounced dead at the scene. MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw highlighted the importance of the protective gear, stating, "This is the second incident in a short period of time that a trooper’s vest saved his life," underscoring the severity of these confrontations and the thin line troopers walk between life and death. Shaw went on to commend the resilience and training of the trooper, "who had less than a year in the department," for effectively dealing with a life-threatening situation, according to MLive.
