In a move underscoring its commitment to advanced technology utilization, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston has elevated Suma Nallapati from her position as Chief Information Officer to Chief AI and Information Officer, a decision signaling significant emphasis on the integration of artificial intelligence in municipal operations. According to the mayor's office, Nallapati will now helm the city's strategies to scale AI in government for increased effectiveness, equity, and resident engagement. "Denver is positioning itself as the nation’s most forward-thinking AI city," said Mayor Johnston, as per the City and County of Denver.
Mayor Johnston stressed that the elevation of Nallapati's title encompasses a vision where technology is used ethically and inclusively, ensuring that the technological advancements reach all communities within the city. "This is about more than just implementing technology; it’s about building public trust, closing opportunity gaps, and ensuring every Denverite has a voice in the future we’re building," he stated, as obtained by the City and County of Denver. Nallapati's responsibilities will include the deployment and governance of AI systems and fostering a robust AI ecosystem through partnerships with both the private sector and academic institutions.
Under Nallapati's past leadership as CIO, Denver launched AI-centric initiatives, including Sunny, a multilingual chatbot, and Tech Support Bot, an internal AI that enhances IT operations. The city also initiated the use of Microsoft Copilot Chat for employee assistance and an AI RFP aimed at inviting innovative vendors to revolutionize city services. Furthermore, Denver hosted the inaugural DenAI Summit, marking a significant step in establishing itself as a center of civic AI innovation.
