Sunday, May 1st is set to be a big, rambunctious day here in SoMa.
For starters, the annual How Weird Street Faire will return from 12-8pm. Now in its 17th year, the one-day fair is taking over Howard Street from First to New Montgomery for a "Cosmic Stew" mixing "diversity, multiculturism, and peace." There will be 10 different stages pumping dance music, a stage featuring a diverse lineup of dancers, an open-air art festival, a market full of vendors with unique wares and a sea of fellow weirdos in costume.
May 1st also marks the kickoff of another new season of the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, which brings 75 free shows to the gardens from May through October. The inaugural performance by the Pedrito Martinez Group runs from 1-3pm; the Afro-Cuban band will give crowds a taste of their brand-new album Habana Dreams, and welcome two special guests to the stage. Exclusive pre-release copies of their album will also be available at the show.
