Los Angeles is best known for its stars — the people kind, at least. If you want to see the actual night sky, you’ll have to find your way to these city spots where you can throw down a blanket, pop up open a bottle of wine and ponder the meaning of life:
1. Griffith Observatory
The Griffith Observatory, in partnership with members of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society, The Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers and The Planetary Society, provides free public telescopes and monthly “Public Star Parties.” 2800 E Observatory Rd.

2. Templin Highway
The Templin Highway, located just 45 minutes from downtown, is home to a gravel pull off that is shielded from headlight glares. Take the highway .7 miles east from "the 5" to reach the location.

3. Saddleback Butte State Park
Although Saddleback Butte State Park officially closes at sunset, its 50 campsites are open for use on a first-come, first-serve basis.

4. Topanga State Park
Although Topanga State Park is located closer to the city, it has rather dark skies (particularly farther west), as well as a campground for stargazers. 20828 Entrada Rd.

5. Pyramid Lake
Located about 1 ½ hours away from Los Angeles, Pyramid Lake spans 1,300 acres and has 21 miles of shoreline.
