A new Filipino spot has opened its doors in the neighborhood. Located at 317 S Broadway in the former Bar Moruno space in Grand Central Market, the fresh addition is called Sari Sari Store.
Opened on July 14th, the new spot comes from Margarita and Walter Manzke, who've used their restaurant experience in Manila to debut a buzzy kiosk modeled after a Filipino general store, complete with shelves of bottles and canned goods.
Expect a rice bowl bonanza, with options ranging from arroz caldo to adobo fried chicken, tortang talong to sisig fried rice ($11-$13). For breakfast, look for a Filipino breakfast sandwich and a Sari Sari breakfast (two eggs any style, longganisa, garlic fried rice, pan de sal, coconut jam), and for dessert, don't overlook the strawberry or chocolate halo halo (a mixture of shaved ice and evaporated milk).
With a four-star rating out of eight reviews on Yelp so far, Sari Sari Store has gotten a good response.
Katherine W., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on July 15th, said: "I got the adobo fried rice, calamansi soda, peanuts, and ordered the summer halo halo. The adobo fried rice was very good, and good flavors. I thought the size was just perfect."
And Aiza G. said: "I had the Torta Talong which is full of flavor and tasty. My boyfriend had the Bbq ribs bowl. Damn damn damn. That was soooo good. Next time, I am getting that dish."
With a price rating of two dollar signs on Yelp, an outing to Sari Sari Store is estimated to cost $11-$30 per person.
