The sandwich had some onions, peppers and cheese, along with the chicken. It tasted fresh, with quality ingredients."

Birdcall

1701 Wewatta St. (in Whole Foods Market), Union Station

Birdcall is a fast-casual chicken sandwich shop that has caused a flap in the food world by automating most functions of cashiers and servers with customer-operated kiosks. As Westword recently clucked, a restaurant lacking those employees can feel "lonely, even eerie."

Whether the chicken joint's investors have found a goose that lays golden eggs or are counting their chickens before they're hatched, customers can now try the unique system for themselves. Lunch and dinner offerings include the Nashville Hot and the Jamaican Jerk chicken sandwiches.

Yelp users are all about Birdcall, which currently holds 4.5 stars out of 46 reviews on the site.

"Surprisingly great," wrote Yelper Ian T., who reviewed Birdcall on February 24. "The best part about the sandwich is the sweet pickles! It contrasted really well with the spiciness. Plain and simple, but the flavor profile was fantastic!"

"Great chicken sandwiches made from locally grown cage-free and antibiotic-free chickens on toasted rolls. Had the Nashville Hot and it was excellent. Crispy outside. Juicy inside," Yelper David M. wrote. "Also liked the easy kiosk iPad ordering system. Someone finally figured out you don't need a human to press the button that says 'chicken sand.' Smart."

Birdcall is open from 7 a.m.–10 p.m. daily.
