Next up is oyster house Mama's On The Half Shell at 2901 Odonnell St. Established in 2003, the seafood-centric tavern features dark wood furnishings, a long bar and an old-school vibe. With four stars out of 969 reviews on Yelp, it's proven to be a local favorite.

Crab cakes are the specialty, whether as an appetizer, salad addition, sandwich or full platter. There are also scallops, oysters, clams, cod, tuna and more, served in the dining rooms upstairs or downstairs.

Try the house drink the Orange Crush, made with fresh-squeezed orange juice, vodka, triple sec and Sprite. 

3. Bmore Licks

Next up, Bmore Licks is a spot to score homemade ice cream. It offers more than 30 flavors each day, including at least two vegan options, plus many more soft serve varieties, according to its website.

Examples include pumpkin Oreo, caramel apple swirl and cotton candy. There are a variety of other desserts as well, from milkshakes to sundaes. Yelpers give the ice cream shop, located at 2437 Eastern Ave., 4.5 stars out of 138 reviews.

4. Blue Hill Tavern

Blue Hill Tavern is another neighborhood go-to, with four stars out of 396 Yelp reviews. It serves elevated New American food like Creole shrimp and grits with andouille sausage, soffritto and roasted tomato, and diver scallops with squash couscous, tomato caper barre blanc and grilled lemon.

The proprietors roast their own coffee beans on-site, which you can take home whole or have made into your favorite espresso drink. There are a few snacks, like pastries, and there's indoor and outdoor seating. You can find it at 913 S. Lakewood Ave.
