Across the country, the end of summer often brings increased hiring. Want to know where workers are most in demand in Washington D.C., and what the best industries to work in might be?

Last month, computer software topped the list of industries based on the number of open jobs in the city, but internet tech and agriculture ranked highest in overall employee satisfaction, according to data from jobs site Glassdoor.

If you're a registered nurse, you're seeing plenty of opportunities for hiring and advancement in Washington. Registered nurses represented the position most in demand on the hiring market last month, with project managers, retail representatives, program managers, and shift managers filling out the top five most job openings by occupation.

Some of the city's top industries reflect national trends, but most are more unique to the area. Of the five industries recruiting the most workers in Washington D.C. last month, computer software and health care were in the top five nationwide; government, consulting, and IT industries ranked second, fourth, and fifth in D.C. but 12th, 14th, and 11th across the U.S., respectively.

However, differences in how employees rate their employers across industries in Washington are similar to patterns seen across the country. Companies with the highest employee ratings in the U.S. appear in internet tech, accounting and law, real estate, computer software, and recruiting. Companies in three of those industries—internet tech, accounting and law, and real estate—are also rated highest among those posting jobs this month in D.C.

Among highly rated companies with new job listings last month, employees gave Washington-based tech companies an average overall rating of 3.93 out of five stars in the city; local farming and agricultural employers receive an average rating of 3.78 stars, accounting services and law firms an average rating of 3.75 stars, and real estate firms around 3.74 stars.

Interested in scoring a new position in an industry with lots of opportunities or stellar employee satisfaction ratings? Companies in the following industries are looking for workers with a variety of skills.

Software and hardware companies like Uber, SAIC, and Oracle are hiring large numbers of account managers, account executives, and systems engineers. And tech companies like Care.com, Varsity Tutors, and Mommy Jobs Online are currently seeking software engineers, policy analysts, and product designers.
