Topping the list is Alla Famiglia. Located at 804 E. Warrington Ave. in Allentown, it is the highest-rated upscale Italian restaurant in Pittsburgh, boasting 4.5 stars out of 193 reviews on Yelp.

Open since 1997 and offering made-from-scratch fare, Alla Famiglia says its mission is "all about celebrating our lives with family through exceptional food, wine and exemplary service."

Begin your meal with raw oysters, an olive bowl, a cheese plate or a cured meat board. On the menu, expect entrees like calamari and shrimp with oregano and spinach; Chilean sea bass with shrimp, vegetables, sautéed spinach and a whole grain French moutarde; and 10 types of veal scallopini.

2. Spork

Next up is Bloomfield's Spork, situated at 5430 Penn Ave. With four stars out of 119 reviews on Yelp, the cocktail bar and Italian spot, serving tapas and more, has proven to be a local favorite for those looking to indulge.

According to its website, Spork sources its ingredients locally whenever possible to highlight the diverse bounty of Western Pennsylvania. It is a chef-owned restaurant that makes everything from scratch and features an ever-changing menu of pasta, house-cured meats and diverse entrees.

Expect a wide variety of fare, including menu options like smoked brisket ravioli with kale, carrot and chive oil; seared king salmon served with basil, cherry tomatoes and white beans; and classic house spaghetti.

Thirsty? A number of signature cocktails are on offer. Look for the rum-based Yoga Pants with chardonnay, lemon and vanilla and the gin-infused How To Succeed with orange bitters. International and domestic draft beers are also available.

3. Joseph Tambellini Restaurant

Highland Park's Joseph Tambellini Restaurant, located at 5701 Bryant St., is another top choice, with Yelpers giving the fancy Italian eatery four stars out of 118 reviews.

Now celebrating its 10th year of business, this spot was established in 2008. There are three floors of dining and an additional outside patio area available when weather permits. Each floor has a different theme but the food is the same: Italian-inspired cuisine and market-fresh steak and seafood.

Look for crab balls with twin sauces to start, a classic Caesar salad and entrees such as a 20-ounce grilled veal chop served with mixed vegetables; broiled flounder with bread crumbs and lemon; and handmade classic cheese ravioli. Here's the dinner menu.
