Veggie-friendly Middle Eastern spot The Helmand is another top choice. Yelpers give the business, located at 806 N. Charles St., four stars out of 583 reviews.

Open since 1989, the restaurant implements different herbs and spices from India, Iran, Greece, and Afghanistan in its cooking. The entrées feature lamb, seafood, beef and chicken but there also several vegetarian options to choose from, as well.

Try the Koufta Challow, a combination of lamb and beef meatballs that are seasoned with raisins, paprika, turmeric in hot green pepper, green peas, fresh tomato sauce and served with challow (Afghan long-grain rice cooked with oil and cumin seeds). Or opt for a vegetarian plate like the vegetarian dolma with baby eggplant, filled with spinach, simmered in sun-dried tomato and herb sauce and served with challow.
