Crime incidents in Newport Beach saw an overall decrease last week, after a previous rise, according to data from SpotCrime, which collects data from police agencies and validated sources. Incidents fell to 352 for the week of January 28, down from 372 the week before.

The offenses that decreased the most were burglary and robbery. Burglary fell to 81 incidents last week, from 82 the week before. Robbery went from nine to eight.

Among the few types of offenses that saw an uptick last week, reports of assault went from four to nine. Incidents of vandalism rose from four to eight, and theft went up from 38 to 40.

There were 205 reports of "other" crimes, a decrease of 30 from the previous week. SpotCrime's broad "other" category includes a variety of offenses like fraud, trespassing, public disturbance and traffic violations. Of those incidents, 16 involved arrests, such as for drug possession, down from 19 reported arrests the week before.

Regarding when crime most often occurs, Saturdays, Fridays and Wednesdays produced the most crime incidents. The largest decrease from the previous week occurred on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, while incidents on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Sundays went up. Late afternoon, late night and late morning saw the most crime.
