Now open at 420 K St. NW in Mount Vernon Square is La Betty, a New American spot from the folks who own Baked & Wired.

It offers American comfort foods like corn dogs (with a vegetarian option), dry-rubbed and smoked ribs and a twice-baked potato. Beer, wine, cider and liquors like vermouth are available to drink.

So far, it's been well-received: it's got a five-star rating out of nine reviews on Yelp.

Falafel Inc.

Stroll past the Wharf at 1140 Maine Ave. SW in Southwest and you'll find Falafel Inc.

It's the second location for the Georgetown-based "social enterprise" organized to help with the Middle East's refugee crisis. Its simple menu offers falafel in a pita sandwich or a bowl, with toppings like red cabbage and tahini and sauces from spicy to creamy. Among the sides are french fries flavored with the za'atar spice blend.

Many employees are refugees themselves, and a percentage of sales goes to the World Food Programme.

Sonny's Pizza

New to 3120 Georgia Ave. NW in Columbia Heights is Sonny's Pizza.

It sells square slices of rustic-style pizza, in styles like pepperoni and sausage with peppers, as well as a handful of whole pies in house-designed configurations. (The "Pesky Mario" for example, comes with mozzarella, mushrooms, rapini and Calabrian chilis.)

Sandwiches like eggplant Parmesan, some salads and appetizers like garlic knots and meatballs round out the menu.

Fruitive

Fruitive is a vegan spot that's made its debut at 1330 Connecticut Ave. NW in Dupont Circle.

The small fast-casual chain features an organic, plant-based menu, starting with fresh juice combos it calls "liquid meals." (In addition to fruits, vegetables and nut milks, many of these combos are bulked up with peanut butter or oats.)

There are avocado toasts, fruit-covered waffles, salads and soups, quesadillas made with cashew cheese and "tacos" whose shells are collard greens.

TallBoy

Finally, TallBoy is a bar that recently opened its doors at 1239 Ninth St. NW in Shaw.

In addition to drinks like the eponymous 16-ounce cans beer (both craft and mass production), cocktails and wine, it offers a list of elevated grilled cheese sandwiches.

The "Cubanito" has ham, cheddar, pickles and Dijon mustard, while the "Smoked and Stacked" combines Swiss cheese with pastrami, sauerkraut and Russian dressing. (Wait — that's a reuben.)
