Exploring the best of Prague, with cheap flights from Virginia BeachPhoto: iStock

Last year, the Czech Republic celebrated its 100th birthday, and Prague — the country's capital city — was named one of 2018's top destinations by the New York Times.

Bisected by the Vltava River, “the City of a Hundred Spires" is known for its Old Town Square, colorful baroque buildings, Gothic churches and its medieval Astronomical Clock, which gives an animated hourly show. Besides the stunning architecture, there are also enough local libations and delightful dishes to appease any traveler.

It’s more doable than you think. According to travel site Skyscanner, there are plenty of flights from Virginia Beach to Prague in the next few months, and the prices aren't too shabby.

So if you're looking for a change of scenery, here are some deals to put on your to-do list. (Prices and availability are current as of publication and subject to change.)

Local restaurant picks

Prague has plenty of top-notch dining options. Here are a few of the most popular, according to Skyscanner.

Potrefena Husa Hybernska (Dlážděná 1003/7 110 00)

Let's start with the basics: where to get a drink. For a popular option, check out Potrefena Husa Hybernska, which has an average of five stars out of seven reviews on Skyscanner.

"This restaurant is great especially for students, backpackers and budget travelers," wrote visitor Emily. "The restaurant ambiance is cozy, especially in winter. They serve up cheap and hearty traditional Czech food for a very reasonable price!"

SaSaZu (Bubenske Nabrezi 306)

One of Prague's most popular restaurants is SaSaZu, with 4.9 stars from seven reviews.

"Food is inspired by dishes from Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia, and after dinner the party gets started around 10 p.m. and continues until the small hours with big-name acts and DJs playing here regularly," wrote reviewer Clare.

U Medvídků (Na Perštýně 345/7)

Also worth considering is U Medvídků.

"I lived in Prague for a year and took family and friends there any time someone was visiting. Both tourists and locals eat at Medviku so you know it's legit, but you also know they'll speak English (and German and French if I recall correctly)," wrote Marie. "I highly recommend the potato dumplings filled with cabbage and smoked meat."

Maly Buddha (Úvoz 110/44)

Finally, there's Maly Buddha.

"You best get into Maly Buddha and fill up on healthy Vietnamese fare. Great vegetarian options and plenty of vegetables on this menu — sometimes an anomaly in Prague," wrote Gregory.

Top Prague attractions

Prague is also full of sites to visit and explore. Here are some popular attractions to round out your trip, again from Skyscanner's listings.

The Charles Bridge (Karlův most 110 00 Praha 1)

First up is The Charles Bridge.

Joining the Lesser Side with Old Town, the Charles Bridge is famously the best spot for viewing the Prague Castle. Thousands of people traverse this cobbled bridge every year in search of magic, bohemia and possibly the good-luck plaque at the 16th statue (in the sequence of 30 on the bridge). Find street performers, vendors and a pleasant view of the city and Prague Castle from this iconic eastern European landmark.

"As part of most Old Town tours, this bridge connects Old Town with Mala Strana. The bridge is mostly free to walk across," said visitor Billy. "On the Old Town side, you can pay to climb up on one of its towers — I think it was several euros. Overall, it is free and part of most walking tours, so it is worth a visit."

Old Town Square (Staroměstské nám., 110 00 Josefov)

Old Town Square is another popular destination.

Aptly named for its location in the Old Town quarter of Prague, Old Town Square is the oldest and most populated square in this historic city. While there are a number of architectural styles that can be seen throughout the space, the dominating figure is the Church of Our Lady before Tyn, a massive Gothic structure completed in the 15th century. Visitors can also check out the astronomical clock, the Jan Hus Memorial, and the baroque St. Nicholas Church.

"If you go to Prague and miss the Staroměstské Náměstí then you have failed on your trip to Prague. The buildings surrounding this plaza are glorious and will make your visit awe-inspiring," wrote visitor Schel.

Prague Castle (Prague 11908)

Lastly, spend some time at Prague Castle.

The former royal compound is actually a series of castles, with a cathedral and several gardens and plazas at the center. If you visit during the day, make sure to catch the changing of the guard, which occurs every hour (the most spectacular of which takes place at noon). If you visit by night, be sure to appreciate the lighting design and beauty as you make your way up, and the spectacular view of Prague on your way down.

"The Prague Castle is beautiful and historic, yet packed," wrote visitor Emily. "It is a must see in Prague but it will be so busy no matter what. I advise you to eat outside of the castle area since it is overpriced!"
