Graveside Bouquet

From the event description:

"Graveside Bouquet" is a suite of songs in the Bengali language (with one special exception) by the writer, poet, composer, activist and revolutionary Kazi Nazrul Islam. The suite's primary principle of musical organization is a piano accompaniment that fuses together the forms and aesthetics of disparate musical genres, including jazz, lieder, maqam and raga music. The lyrical content of the songs, for which English translations and explanations will be provided and narrated, progresses from an exploration of the first hints of romantic interest to utter infatuation and eventually uninhibited sorrow giving into bitter regret and self-destruction. The musical presentation will be preceded by a short lecture on Nazrul.

When: Friday, Aug. 9, 7-9 p.m.
Where: Church In the Gardens, 50 Ascan Ave.

Hop Culture and Origin Malt Present: Seed to Sip Malt School

From the event description:

Hops may be the pop star of beer, but it takes at least four ingredients to create a delicious brew. And while hops steal the limelight, malt is the backbone of creating flavorful beer. Join Sara Hagerty and Whitney Thompson from Ohio’s Origin Malt and Natalie Blair and Libby Roether from Rhinegeist Brewery to learn the ins and outs of one of beer’s most underestimated ingredients. We'll meet at LIC Beer Project to touch, smell and taste our way through malt sensory, to learn about the malting process, and to learn about malt's impact and how brewers incorporate it into a beer’s design. To bring our workshop full circle, each participant will have the chance to sample an exclusive, limited-edition collaboration between LIC Beer Project and Origin Malt.

When: Sunday, Aug. 11, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Where: LIC Beer Project, 39-28 23rd St.
Admission: $15
