The number of crime incidents in Charlotte saw an overall increase last week, for the second week in a row, according to SpotCrime, which collects data from police agencies and validated sources. Incidents rose to 1,685 for the week of July 22, up from 1,583 the week before.

The overall increase in crime reports was led by theft and vandalism. Theft incidents rose to 856 last week, from 707 the week before. Vandalism went from 97 to 103. Reports of theft have continued to grow for the last two weeks.

There were 281 reported assaults last week. That represents an increase from 278 incidents the previous week.

Among the few types of offenses that saw a downturn last week, reports of robbery went from 47 to 39, and arson fell from two to one.

There were 309 reports of "other" crimes, a decrease of 51 from the previous week. SpotCrime's broad "other" category includes a variety of offenses like fraud, trespassing, public disturbance and traffic violations. Of those incidents, 73 involved arrests, such as for drug possession, down from 88 reported arrests the week before.

Looking at crime patterns in different areas of the city, Downtown Charlotte, East Forest and Montclaire South had the most reported incidents last week. East Forest and Montclaire South were at the top of the list the previous week as well.

Downtown Charlotte saw the largest increase; incidents in the neighborhood have been rising for two weeks in a row. Crime reports in East Forest also rose for a second week, and incidents in Harris-Houston are up considerably as well.

Regarding when most crimes are committed, Wednesday, Friday and Tuesday had the most crime incidents last week. The largest increase from the previous week occurred on Friday, Wednesday and Tuesday, while incidents on Monday and Sunday went down. Comparing times of day, late morning, late afternoon and evening saw the most crime last week.
