The number of crime incidents in San Antonio saw an overall decline last month, for the second month in a row, according to data from SpotCrime, which collects data from police agencies and validated sources.

Incidents fell by 6.4%, from 43,377 in June to 40,610 in July. Despite last month's decrease, crime reports remain at about the same level as a year ago. Crime levels tend to follow seasonal patterns, making it useful to look at the year-over-year comparison as well.

The offenses most on the decline last month were theft and assault. Theft fell from 10,184 reported incidents in June to 8,391 in July, and has fallen by 1,253 incidents since July of last year. Assault incidents went from 5,004 to 4,092 for the month, or about an 18% decrease. Assault reports are down event more from a year ago.

While somewhat smaller categories, there was also a notable percentage decrease last month in burglary, from 2,393 incidents per month to 2,172, and in robbery, from 449 to 417. Both burglary and robbery have decreased since the same month last year.

Among the few types of offenses that saw an uptick last month, vandalism reports went from 1,183 to 1,302. Shooting incidents rose from 593 to 599. Vandalism and shooting incidents have seen an overall upward trend since the same time last year.

When it comes to crime patterns in different areas of the city, the largest decline last month occurred in Highland Hills, Downtown and Government Hill Alliance. Greater Gardendale, Artesia Community Guild and Alamo Farmsteads-Babcock Road also saw considerable percentage decreases in crime offenses for the month, although they continue to have lower overall crime levels. Over the past year, crime has gone up the most in Community Workers Council, and declined the most in Prospect Hill.

Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays saw the most crime incidents last month. The largest decrease from the previous month occurred on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, while incidents on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday went up. Comparing times of day, late night, early afternoon and late afternoon saw the most crime last month on average each day.
