The number of crime reports in Raleigh saw an overall decline last month, after a previous rise, according to data from CrimeoMeter, which collects reports from police agencies and validated sources.
Incidents fell by 2.2%, from 984 in July to 962 in August. However, looking at the broader trend, Raleigh crime has increased from where it was a year ago. Crime tends to follow similar patterns over time, with seasonal ups and downs, making a year-over-year comparison most relevant.
The offenses most on the decline last month were weapons offenses and theft. Weapons offenses fell from 51 reported incidents in July to 32 in August, but have risen by four incidents since August of last year. Theft incidents went from 134 to 120 for the month, or about a 10% decrease. However, theft reports have increased since a year ago, so there is still some ground to recover.
Among other categories, there was also a decrease last month in burglary, from 25 incidents per month to 16, and in auto burglary, from 77 to 67. Burglary reports have decreased considerably since the same month last year, while auto burglary incidents have risen.

When it comes to crime patterns in different areas of the city, East Raleigh, South Central and Wade saw the largest decline from July to August. Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays saw the most crime incidents last month. The largest decrease from the previous month occurred on Wednesdays, Tuesdays and Mondays, while incidents on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays went up. Comparing times of day, late afternoon, after midnight and evening saw the most crime last month on average each day.
