Want the intel on Long Beach's most happening dining destinations?

We took a data-driven look at the question, using Yelp to deduce which eateries have been seeing especially high review volumes this month.

To find out who made the list, we looked at Long Beach businesses on Yelp by category and counted how many reviews each received. Rather than compare them based on number of reviews alone, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month, and tracked businesses that consistently increased their volume of reviews to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.

Read on to see which spots have the momentum heading into springtime.

The Hideaway

Open since late last December, this spot is trending compared to other businesses categorized as "American (Traditional)" on Yelp.

Citywide, such eateries saw a median 1.3% increase in new reviews over the past month, but The Hideaway saw an 80% increase, with a slight downward trend from a five-star rating a month ago to 4.5 stars today.

It's not the only trending outlier in the traditional American category: Noble Bird Rotisserie has seen a 43.5% increase in reviews, and Long Beach Tap House and Dickey's Barbecue Pit have seen 9.8 and 0.9% increases, respectively.

Located at 4137 E. Anaheim St. in Long Beach, The Hideaway specializes in Niman Ranch beef, pork and lamb dishes.

It's open from 3–10 p.m. on Monday-Thursday and Sunday and 3–11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Plancha Latin Kitchen

Whether or not you've been hearing buzz about Long Beach's Plancha Latin Kitchen, the Latin American, Mexican and Cuban spot is a hot topic, according to Yelp review data.

While businesses categorized as "Mexican" on Yelp saw a median 1.2% increase in new reviews over the past month, Plancha Latin Kitchen bagged a 24.5% increase in new reviews within that time frame, maintaining a superior 4.5-star rating.

Here's more about the business, from its history section on Yelp: "After spending many years working with multiple restaurant brands, a group of seasoned, passionate, restaurant veterans came together to establish a brand of their own—something they could all contribute to and be very proud of. Plancha Latin Kitchen is a collaboration of many different backgrounds and cultures presenting a Latin-American style cuisine that is blended, unique and healthy. It's what Southern California is all about."

There's more that's trending on Long Beach's Mexican scene: Joliza's Tacos has seen a 18.3% increase in reviews.

Open at 3860 Worsham Ave., Suite 300, since last November, Plancha Latin Kitchen is open from 11 a.m.–9 p.m. on Monday-Thursday and Sunday and 11 a.m.–9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Rose Park Roasters

The latest location of Rose Park Roasters is also making waves. Open since early February 2019 at 800 Pine Ave., the breakfast/brunch and New American spot, which offers coffee, tea and more, has seen a 12.3% bump in new reviews over the last month, compared to a median review increase of 1.1% for all businesses tagged "American (New)" on Yelp. Moreover, on a month-to-month basis Rose Park Roasters's review count increased by more than 120%.

Here's more about the business from Yelp: "Rose Park Roasters has been a Long Beach local business for over 10 years. We started as simply an online and wholesale coffee roaster but opened our first coffee shop in 2014 on 4th Street just east of Retro Row. We roast all our coffee at our newly opened roastery at 620 Cherry Avenue and now have our second retail location at 800 Pine Ave., where we’ve expanded the food side of our menu to full brunch and lunch offerings centered around salads and sandwiches, very carefully and sustainably sourced ingredients and making almost every element of the menu in-house."

What's the business known for? "Delicious coffee, chef-driven salads and sandwiches, and a new beautiful cafe space. Come visit us for coffee, breakfast or lunch!" — that's according to its page on Yelp.

There's more than one hot spot trending in Long Beach's New American category: The Ordinarie has seen a 6.1% increase in reviews, and Portuguese Bend Distillery and The 908 have seen 5.7 and 4.6% increases, respectively.

Rose Park Roasters is open from 7 a.m.–5 p.m. daily. Over the past month, it's maintained a strong 4.5-star rating among Yelpers.

Then there's a member of the Mediterranean Panini Kabob Grill chain, which is the city's buzziest breakfast and brunch spot by the numbers.

The eatery, which opened at 4101 McGowen St., Suite 100, in August 2019, saw a 1.3% increase in new reviews over the last month — matching that of all businesses for the Yelp business category "Breakfast & Brunch."

If you're curious about specialities, "Panini Kabob Grill is a scratch-kitchen concept that takes Mediterranean cuisine to the next level... PKG specializes in kebabs and paninis, along with many other breakfast, lunch and dinner fare at excellent prices." — that's courtesy of its page on Yelp.

It's not the only trending outlier in the breakfast and brunch category: Roscoe's House of Chicken & Waffles has seen a 0.4% increase in reviews, and Waffle Love has seen a 4.3% bump.

Panini Kabob Grill is open from 8 a.m.–9:30 p.m. daily.
