1. JoJu

Topping the list is Vietnamese sandwich spot JoJu in Queens.

Situated at 83-25 Broadway in Elmhurst, JoJu, which recently added a second location in Midtown, specializes in banh mi and offers more than a dozen modern takes on this traditional Vietnamese sandwich, filled with such proteins as bulgogi beef, lemongrass chicken, pork belly and veggie-friendly "mock ham." Boasting 4.5 stars out of 1,627 reviews on Yelp, it is the highest-rated affordable sandwich spot in New York City.

We turned to Yelp for more about JoJu.

"In 2011, an idea was hatched at a dining table in Queens," the business writes on Yelp. "During one of their weekly dinners, Scott Wong proposed that they extend their family meals past their homes in the form of a restaurant nestled in the heart of their borough. His wife Joanna, her sister Julie, and Julie's husband Chris jumped on board to create JoJu (Joanna + Julie), a cozy shop devoted to crafting the perfect banh mi."

2. Ess-a-Bagel

Next up is Midtown's Ess-a-Bagel, located at 831 Third Ave. (between 50th and 51st streets). This bagel bakery — which got its start down in Gramercy Park in 1976 and has since expanded to several locations around Manhattan — serves up fresh-made bagels, deli sandwiches and more, and Yelpers give the budget-friendly option four stars out of 3,583 reviews.

If you're curious for more, we found these details about Ess-a-Bagel.

"Ess-a-Bagel has been serving phenomenal bagels, pastries and breakfast for nearly 40 years in New York City," the business explains in the history section of its Yelp profile. "From hungry locals to tourists coming to see what we're all about, we deliver the same fantastic cuisine day in and day out. Our commitment to preparing certified kosher food broadens our options for those who follow kosher."

3. Cheeky Sandwiches

Last but not least is Cheeky Sandwiches in Chinatown, another much-loved, inexpensive go-to, with 4.5 stars out of 1,157 Yelp reviews. Sandwiches at this cozy hole-in-the-wall include a fried chicken sandwich on a buttermilk biscuit, shrimp and oyster po' boys, a veggie muffuletta and more — each under $8.50. Head over to 35 Orchard St. (between Canal and Hester streets) to see for yourself.

Yelper Al H., who reviewed Cheeky Sandwiches on Jan. 18, wrote, "I had the chicken on a biscuit with gravy and coleslaw, and yes, it was good!"

Tyler V. added, "These are probably the cheapest sandwiches you can get in NYC."
