The San Diego Zoo Safari Park recently became the proud home to two critically endangered Sumatran tiger cubs, born on July 12, 2023 to first-time mother Diana, marking the first birth of this species at the park's Tull Family Tiger Trail habitat in seven years according to Fox 5 San Diego.

These tiny bundles of fur are an incredible success story in the effort to conserve the Sumatran tiger species, with only an estimated 400 to 600 tigers remaining on Earth, and their arrival comes just in time for Global Tiger Day on July 29, as noted by both ABC 10 News San Diego.
"We are elated about the birth of these tiger cubs," said Lisa Peterson, executive director of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, adding that "these births are so important to the conservation of this species" as shared by ABC 10 News San Diego. With both a male and female cub, these adorable siblings represent a significant stride in preventing the extinction of their species, as the park has played an important role in conservation efforts for Sumatran tigers due to a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Sumatran Tiger Species Survival Plan.
Mother Diana and her cubs are doing well, according to wildlife care specialists, who have been closely monitoring the new family; they've observed that Diana is an attentive and gentle mother, with the cubs appearing strong and nursing frequently as Fox 5 San Diego reports. For now, the cubs will remain in their den with Diana for several weeks to bond and learn from their mother in this critical period. The specialists estimate that Diana will bring her cubs out of the den when they are about 8 to 10 weeks old, sharing them with park visitors and the community.
The survival of the Sumatran tiger species is heavily threatened by challenges such as habitat loss, human-wildlife conflicts, and poaching, which is why the birth of these cubs is so significant for their conservation according to both ABC 10 News San Diego.
