On August 16, 2023, Petaluma Police officers were dispatched to investigate multiple thefts at various retail establishments.
The first of these incidents took place at Dick's Sporting Goods, where a suspect, Evan Thomas, was reported to have fled the store with over $1,000 worth of merchandise without paying. A quick police response resulted in his arrest, and a subsequent search of his vehicle uncovered the stolen items, as well as burglary tools, and suspected fentanyl, according to a police press release. Thomas was then booked at the Sonoma County Jail for Felony Grand Theft, Possession of Fentanyl, and Possession of Burglary Tools.

While dealing with the theft at Dick's Sporting Goods, law enforcement was alerted to a separate felony theft occurring at the Wilco Farm Store. Surveillance footage showed two unidentified suspects escaping through emergency doors with approximately $3,000 worth of merchandise. Petaluma Police have since released images of the suspects captured on video, asking the public to help identify them by contacting Officer Eduardo Estrella, as detailed in the press release.

As investigations were ongoing at the Wilco Farm Store, yet another felony theft report came in from Kohl's. An unidentified suspect had allegedly filled a backpack with over $1,000 worth of perfume before fleeing the scene without paying for the items. Officers were unable to locate the suspect despite a thorough search of the area.
These incidents of retail theft are not isolated occurrences. The Petaluma Police Department has seen an apparent spike in organized retail theft over several years. Although the exact causes of this trend remain a subject of debate, some community members and authorities have raised the possibility that recent legislative changes and voter-approved initiatives have reduced the consequences for offenders engaging in retail theft.
