A burglary suspect was apprehended after a dramatic foot chase through the Arroyo Center in Petaluma, California. According to a Petaluma Police Department press release, local residents reported hearing gunshots and the sound of breaking glass before calling the police.
Officers were dispatched to the scene and soon discovered a broken window as they arrived at the Arroyo Center. With a suspicion that the intruder might still be inside the business, officers began making announcements for the person to come out. Within moments, 23-year-old Yony Rodas, a Petaluma resident, emerged from the building but refused to surrender to the police.
Ignoring the officers' commands and fleeing on foot, Rodas led the police on a chase through the Arroyo Center towards a nearby residential neighborhood. With the initial 911 call reporting gunshots, the pursuing officers feared Rodas was armed and posed a threat to the community. In a decisive move, an officer deployed a taser, striking Rodas and bringing an end to the foot pursuit. The suspect was subsequently arrested without further incident.
Upon searching Rodas and his belongings, officers discovered several burglary tools, but no firearm was found. An extensive search of the area and the broken-into business also didn't reveal any evidence of a weapon being used in the crime. Rodas was later booked into the Sonoma County Jail on charges of burglary, resisting arrest, and possession of burglary tools.
The Petaluma Police Department expressed gratitude to the watchful residents who reported the suspicious activity, which ultimately led to the arrest of Rodas.
