Oh, Dummy! CHP Marin Busts Driver for Carpool Lane Violation with Mannequin CompanionCHP Marin

What's a driver to do when they want to cruise in the carpool lane without actually having a human passenger? Well, some resort to desperate and bizarre measures, and that's exactly what happened in Marin County, California. A driver was recently busted for a carpool violation with a mannequin sitting in the back seat, as reported on the CHP Marin Facebook page today.

While this might seem like an isolated incident, it's not the first time someone has tried to pull a fast one on the authorities. Back in February 2021, a California man was cited for using a mannequin as a passenger in his Toyota Tacoma to gain access to carpool lanes. According to AP News, the mannequin, complete with gray hair, wrinkles, glasses, and a face mask, managed to fool officers for nearly a year and a half.

Although the driver faced a fine of at least $400, the mannequin was not confiscated, and no additional punishment was applied for attempting to deceive the officers. According to the same AP News article, drivers have previously tried various tactics to make it appear as if another person is in their vehicle - from a bundle of blankets to a small doll.

It's essential to keep in mind that carpool lanes exist for a reason: to encourage ridesharing and reduce traffic congestion. It's clear that attempting to evade the rules in such a comical manner will still lead to penalties and fines.
