A Eureka man has been dished a decade-long sentence for his crimes involving child pornography. William Wood, 62, was handed down 120 months in federal prison after he admitted to harboring hundreds of vile images and videos of minors, as announced by United States Attorney Ismail J. Ramsey and FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert K. Tripp. His sentencing was overseen by United States District Judge Trina L. Thompson on May 17, confirming details released by the Department of Justice.
An indictment by a federal grand jury had hung over Wood since December of last year, with a guilty plea logged in October 2023. What lay stocked on Wood’s electronic devices was a morass of illegal content—over 300 files labeled as child pornography by the authorities—that included disturbing depictions of infants and toddlers, among other prepubescent victims. According to the government's sentencing memorandum, he not only hoarded these files but perpetuated their circulation by distributing them on social media to at least one individual.
Beyond the prison sentence, Judge Thompson has decreed that Wood will also be subjected to five years of supervised release and must pay $35,000 in restitution. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, this will commence upon his time behind bars.
The case was carried forward by the concerted efforts of the FBI and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, culminating in Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelsey Davidson steering the prosecution with assistance from Sara Slattery. The sentencing documentation illuminated the extent of Woods’s involvement in this illegal trade, underlining the depth of his exploitation and dissemination of children's innocence for lurid purposes.
