San Diego is on high alert after a series of pellet gun shootings early Saturday morning has led police to investigate the possibility of a hate crime. According to the San Diego Police Department, the first incident occurred when a pellet gun was fired from a newer, black sedan, targeting a business on University Ave.
The string of attacks continued with a man and his wife coming under fire in Old Town, thankfully avoiding injury. In what appears to be a related event, reported by official sources, a security guard at The Rail on Fifth Ave was hit on the arm, and Number One Fifth Ave also saw shots fired with no injuries reported.
The situation intensified at Rich's Nightclub on University Ave, where three individuals were struck by gel pellets, causing an employee to suffer an eye injury that required minor surgery. Following the series of assaults, Pecs Bar on University Ave was also targeted, yet no one was injured there.
SDPD's Western Division has responded by increasing patrols in the Hillcrest district to bolster security and reassure the community. SDPD urges anyone with information that can aid their investigation to contact their non-emergency line at 619-531-2000. As SDPD officers canvassed the area for evidence, walking with increased vigilance among those they serve, the department promises to maintain this presence over the next few days.
