The death of an 18-year-old pedestrian in Forestville has led to the arrest of a Santa Rosa woman, Alyssa Whitten, amidst suspicion of an attempted cover-up after her vehicle was found burning just days after the tragedy. The hit-and-run incident occurred on Sunday, and claimed the life of Oswaldo Mario-Rogelio Cardenas Jr. from Cloverdale.
Witnesses and security footage provided information that assisted investigators in identifying the suspect vehicle as a Buick. A significant break in the case emerged on Wednesday when California Highway Patrol officers responded to a vehicle fire on Llano Road in Santa Rosa. The burning vehicle matched the description and exhibited signs of damage consistent with the hit-and-run, according to NBC Bay Area.
Alyssa Whitten, the registered owner of the vehicle, was soon identified as the driver at the time of the crash, increasing suspicion of an attempted cover-up due to the burning car. Whitten was arrested on Friday at her Santa Rosa residence and was subsequently booked into the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
The examination of evidence and collaboration of witness accounts enabled law enforcement to not only determine the identity of the individual involved, but also potentially reveal an attempt to destroy incriminating evidence.
