On September 22, just before midnight, a series of reckless decisions led to an incident on the streets of Healdsburg, California. According to a Facebook post by the Healdsburg Police Department, an officer patrolling the area noticed a vehicle with numerous code violations and initiated a traffic stop and DUI investigation.
Instead of following the instructions from law enforcement, the driver, later identified as 37-year-old Rogelio Silvaescobedo, turned on the ignition and fled at a high rate of speed. The officer pursued the vehicle, ultimately leading to a crash that injured Silvaescobedo's passenger.
Silvaescobedo received medical care on the scene and at a local hospital before being booked at the Sonoma County Jail. The charges against him include felony vehicular evasion causing injury, DUI causing injury, resisting arrest, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license from a previous DUI, and lacking proof of insurance.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that every day, nearly 30 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes, and countless others are severely injured.
