In an effort to increase overall traffic safety in the city of Petaluma, the Petaluma Police Department has cracked down on those who choose to endanger themselves and others by driving under the influence. According to a recent report by the Petaluma Police Department, a DUI Saturation Patrol was deployed on Saturday night, resulting in the arrest of five impaired drivers.
Between 4:00 PM and 2:00 AM, officers stopped 82 drivers, evaluated 15 for intoxication, and ultimately arrested five for driving impaired. Two of the drivers arrested for DUI were found to be operating their vehicles without a California Drivers License. Tragically, one driver displayed a blood alcohol content of .28%, more than triple the legal limit of .08%. An additional DUI arrest was made by routine patrols during the operation.
This DUI Saturation Patrol was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As authorities continue their efforts to locate and identify impaired drivers, those caught driving under the influence pay heavily. The average cost for a first-time DUI offender ranges from $13,500 to $20,000 in fines and penalties, coupled with a suspended license.
If people suspect a driver to be under the influence, they are encouraged to call 911, aiding local law enforcement efforts to keep their community safe.
