The City of Los Angeles and its surrounding areas are witnessing a surge in organized retail crime as the police confront a rising number of flash-rob incidents involving repeat offenders. These criminal activities target various retail establishments throughout the Los Angeles region, prompting a heightened law enforcement response.

On Thursday, September 14. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) conducted a joint operation with local business Loss Prevention, focusing on a business located in the 3700 block of Crenshaw Boulevard. The operation aimed at resolving a series of theft incidents, resulting in nine arrests, according to the LAPD.

Among the arrestees, two were charged with felony 490.4(a)PC "Organized Retail Theft Crew," one for an outstanding felony arrest warrant for 10851(a)VC, and four for misdemeanor shoplifting under 459.5(a)PC. Two suspects received Release from Custody (RFC) citations for 459.5(a)PC.

The LAPD's Southwest Burglary Detectives seized a U-Haul containing over-the-counter pharmaceuticals stolen from two businesses, with an estimated worth of around 37 grams of Methamphetamine and US Currency obtained from the illegal sales of these products.

Recent reports suggest a rise in organized retail theft, with five different crews apprehended by Southwest Burglary Detectives from January to September 2023. These theft crews have been linked to retail locations in Newton Area, 77th Area, Southeast Area, Los Angeles County Sheriffs Area, Culver City, and Long Beach, according to the LAPD.

The LAPD's Southwest Division has expressed its commitment to continue taking action against such criminal activities. In a bid to identify and apprehend additional suspects, the police urge anyone with information to come forward and report it to Southwest Area Burglary Detectives, or to call the LA Regional Crime Stoppers.

In another account of the ongoing investigations, My News LA shed light on the involvement of Southland flash mob retail crimes also correlating to LAPD's efforts to curb this growing issue.

Despite the successes in apprehending suspects and dismantling organized retail theft crews, the LAPD faces significant challenges in managing the crime rates in the city and protecting local businesses. The surge in flash-rob tactics, which deploy multiple suspects to overwhelm establishments and quickly remove stolen goods, has necessitated a coordinated law enforcement response to effectively counteract this trend.
