On Sunday, September 24, an underwater expedition brought together members of law enforcement, dive rescue teams, and volunteers from various backgrounds. This year's 5th Annual Steamboat Cove Underwater Cleanup saw the San Bernardino Sheriff's Dive Rescue team join forces with Mohave County Sheriff, Lake Havasu City Police Department, and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) divers, as well as land volunteers, in an effort to protect and preserve the environment of Lake Havasu.
Hosted by the Lake Havasu Divers Association, Lake Havasu City Sea Scouts, and the BLM, the Steamboat Cove Cleanup is a yearly event that aims to clear debris from the lake floor. As reported on Nixle, a total of 31 divers and 29 land volunteers took part in the arduous task this year, dedicating 31 hours of underwater exploration to maximizing the positive impact on the waters of Lake Havasu.
The underwater cleanup yielded a diverse array of discarded items, including anchors, sunglasses, old liquid bottles, aluminum cans, and various articles of trash. Among these sunken treasures, San Bernardino Sheriff Divers also discovered an unlikely find – a drone that had previously crashed into the lake a week prior. Once located, the submerged drone was successfully retrieved and returned to its owner.
Acknowledging the importance of the annual event, the Colorado River Station Dive Rescue team expressed their appreciation for the invite to take part in the cleanup. According to Nixle's post, the team thanked the Lake Havasu Divers Association, Lake Havasu Sea Scouts, and BLM for allowing them to participate in the underwater endeavor, recognizing the power of collective action toward a greener, cleaner future.
