
An officer-involved shooting in Anaheim, California yesterday, involved the fatal shooting of a felony sexual assault suspect, 29-year-old Luis Munoz. According to an official City of Anaheim Police Department statement, Munoz threatened officers with a large knife at the time of his apprehension.
The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on the 300 block of W. Orangewood Ave. After police extensively attempted to arrest Munoz, he fled successfully, leading to a confrontation at Harbor Blvd. and Orangewood Ave. The situation concluded with an officer-involved shooting, and Munoz being fatally shot.
Despite immediate medical attention by Anaheim Fire and Rescue personnel, Munoz was pronounced dead at the scene. A large knife was recovered, believed to be Munoz's. No officers were wounded in the incident.
A thorough investigation has been initiated by the Orange County District Attorney's Office. In addition to this, various supporting agencies are involved including Anaheim PD Homicide Detectives, the Anaheim PD Major Incident Review Team (MIRT), Anaheim PD Internal Affairs, and personnel from the Anaheim Police Review Board (PRB) and the Office of Independent Review (OIR).
Investigations and reviews for this case are underway. All parties involved are working towards determining the facts of this unfortunate incident, in an effort to ensure the level of accountability expected in law enforcement.
