The Ventura County Sheriff's Office has alerted the public to a rise in thefts of early-model Chevy Silverado trucks around Fillmore city. A recent statement from the Fillmore Police Department highlighted the truck's high resale value and desirable catalytic converters as a main reason the Silverados are being targeted by thieves.
The recent thefts indicate a growing nationwide trend, with Chevy Silverado pick-up trucks, specifically those made between 1999 and 2006, becoming a common target. Law enforcement agencies strongly urge owners of these vehicles to be cautious.
The Fillmore Police Department has issued advice on preventive measures and this includes parking in secured garages or well-lit areas with surveillance cameras. They also recommend installing security cameras and motion-sensitive lighting around parking areas.
They urge owners to install catalytic converter anti-theft devices, though the pros and cons of these devices, their cost and effectiveness, vary widely. Drivers should also remember to always remove all valuable items, including keys, from the vehicle when unattended, and ensure it is locked.
Residents are encouraged to report any unusual activity they observe by calling either the Fillmore Police Station on (805) 524-2233 or the Ventura County Sheriff's Communication Center on (805) 654-9511.
