The incident happened at the intersection of Evans Road and Whispering Wood Lane in Perris. A 2020 Honda Fit stopped at the stop sign and was preparing to turn southbound onto Evans Road. A 2008 Nissan Pathfinder traveling northbound hit the Honda Fit after failing to stop at its own stop sign. The driver of the Honda Fit was pronounced dead at the scene. The Nissan Pathfinder was found north of the collision site with significant front-end damage. The driver of the Nissan had fled the scene and is not yet found.

The Perris Station Reconstruction Team is now leading the investigation. They conducted an examination at the scene to piece together the moments before the fatal collision according to Riverside County Sheriff's office. A temporary road closure was instituted as part of the investigation.

The identity of the deceased driver remains withheld pending further investigation.
