Filipino-American media professional Jannelle So has been appointed to the Los Angeles County Commission for Women by Janice Hahn, Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. The decision highlights the recognition of So's significant contributions to the media industry and the important perspective she brings as an Asian American woman, immigrant, and communicator. This insight is sure to aid in the advancement of LA County's Commission for Women, according to the press release.
LA County, having the largest population of Filipinos outside Manila, calls for esteemed representation within the community on the Commission for Women, per Hahn's notes. So's career, along with being a reflection of her strength and perseverance, spans across different media platforms—founding her own production company in 2014, Jannelle So Productions—being one of them. She also launched SO Jannelle, a weekly lifestyle show, in 2017 on several broadcasting platforms, showcasing her consistent support for Filipino representation.
Alongside her triumphs in television, So also garnered recognition as a writer, winning the Migration Advocacy Award from the Commission on Filipinos Overseas in 2021. Her writings, published in renowned newspapers like The Philippine Star and Balita, effectively encapsulate her experiences as an Asian immigrant and the tribulations that go hand-in-hand with adapting to a new world.
In a recent discussion with Hahn on SOJannelleTV, So elaborated on the significance of representation in influential positions. She claims that her experiences grappling with obstacles as an immigrant, an Asian, and a woman, have shaped her outlook toward the Commission for Women and fortified her dedication to promoting women's issues and their cause.
