On October 1, 2023, Thermal Station deputies from the Riverside Sheriff's Department responded to a negligent firearm discharge in Coachella. The case led to the arrests of Jose Luis Acevedo Prado, a 33-year-old resident of Palm Desert, and Lydia Lizzette Valencia, a 30-year-old resident of Palm Desert. In their investigation, the Coachella Community Action Team discovered weapons and narcotics at a Palm Desert residence.

The details of the case became progressively alarming as it progressed, with the presence of firearms and large quantities of narcotics surfacing according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. During a search, deputies located two firearms, approximately 1,400 fentanyl pills, 1.5 pounds of processed marijuana, narcotics sales equipment, and around $1,550 in cash. Acevedo Prado and Valencia were taken into custody without incident and are currently being held at the John Benoit Detention Center on various charges, one of which is child endangerment.
