Assembly member Laura Friedman has successfully procured $933,000 from the 2023-24 State Budget for a major renovation of Glendale, California's Fremont Park. The park's Master Renovation Plan, including better and expanded facilities, is set to start this month.

The 7.9-acre Fremont Park, centrally located in Glendale and established a century ago, is home to a range of amenities, from a basketball court to a wading pool. Despite its popularity, the park's worn-out condition required major enhancements, and its Master Renovation Plan, initiated in 2013, had been constantly held back by insufficient funds, according to the City of Glendale.

"Parks ensure equitable access to better health for Glendale residents, not all can enjoy a neighborhood garden or extended green space," said Glendale Mayor Dan Brotman.

The Master Plan, when completed, will offer new perks such as a community building with meeting rooms, a kitchen, restrooms, and office space. More, to include a soccer field, a splash pad, pickleball courts, a drive path, a walking path, exercise equipment, picnic pavilions, BBQs, and additional parking, are on the to-do list.

Friedman highlighted the importance of investing in Fremont Park as a crucial green space for the densley populated Glendale. "Investing in Fremont Park is investing in our community. We're ensuring that Glendale families continue enjoying the park for the next 100 years," she added.

Councilmember Elen Asatryan restated the role parks play, specifically Fremont Park, in supporting mental health and well-being. She spoke about the significance of the park's accessibility for city's residents, particularly those in multi-family units or affordable housing projects.

The renovations are underway and estimated to wrap up by February 2025, setting the stage for a renewed Fremont Park and catering to future generations, as per the City of Glendale.
