Yesterday, a significant fire blazed through a vacant two-story house in Granada Hills, managed by the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). According to the LAFD report, defensive firefighting operations ensued upon the firefighters' arrival and the blaze totally engulfed the structure.
This fire was successfully contained in 43 minutes by a group of 39 firefighters. The LAFD ALERT also stated that there were no casualties. Upon close examination, the property exhibited signs of having been used for a marijuana grow operation.
The investigation into the exact origin of the fire continues, with increased speculation as to whether the building had been used for illegal activities. The profitability of marijuana cultivation often incentivizes conversion of warehouses and similar structures into grow operations. Yet, these ventures usually go unnoticed until hazardous conditions or, as in this case, a fire, expose them, posing threats to the local community and the structure's inhabitants.
