As the time for flu season approaches, the LA County Library has collaborated with the LA County Department of Public Health to organize vaccine clinics at various libraries throughout the county. Until December 20, these clinics will supply the public with updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccines, flu shots, and Mpox vaccines for eligible residents.
The effectiveness of vaccinations, significantly reducing risks associated with respiratory and other diseases, is well documented. Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of LA County Department of Public Health, thanked the library system for facilitating vaccination access for residents. She underscored that, with the arrival of the colder seasons, certain individuals are exposed to an elevated risk of severe sickness. These clinics help safeguard vulnerable members of the community.
A strong recommendation for both the updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine and the flu vaccine comes from health authorities. The CDC asserts that the updated vaccine plays a critical role in protecting against severe illnesses caused by COVID-19. Flu vaccinations are recommended by the LA County Department of Public Health for all individuals aged above six months, including healthy children and adults. The flu vaccine has demonstrated efficacy in reducing flu-related illnesses and serious complications which can lead to hospitalization or death.
As per the LA County Library's vaccine clinic website, the Mpox vaccine is available exclusively to certain groups, and the updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine is intended for individuals aged 12 and above. There is no requirement for health insurance to get a vaccination, but insured persons should provide their insurance card details. An individual's immigration status will not to be asked for at the vaccine clinics.
The LA County Library, faithfully serving 3.4 million residents over 3,000 square miles, aims to minimize obstacles and augment fair access for everyone. The library system operates 85 community libraries, an institutional library, and a mobile fleet of 15 vehicles. LA County Library Director Skye Patrick stated in her remarks that this collaboration is centered on the well-being of the communities they serve, working to ensure residents have access to crucial vaccines to safeguard their family and friends.
Although walk-ins are welcomed at the vaccine clinics, community members are urged to schedule appointments online at myturn.ca.gov for reduced wait times.
Vaccines are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis and supply of specific brands is dependent upon availability. For additional details concerning vaccine eligibility and participating library locations, visit the LA County Library vaccine clinic website.
