An officer-involved shooting, under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division, occurred in the Historic Core neighborhood of Downtown Los Angeles. On October 14, at approximately 1:30 a.m., uniformed officers were flagged by a citizen nearby South Broadway and 7th Street. They were directed towards a knife-wielding man, later identified, as 47-year-old Earl Callier.

Despite being commanded to by the officers, Callier, not dropped his knife and continued walking north on South Broadway towards 6th Street. Less-Lethal-Launchers (LLL) were used, though they proved ineffective, prompting Callier to run, carrying his knife. The suspect turned east on 6th Street and continued towards a crowd of pedestrians.

The officers deployed an another LLL and less than effective, Callier ran into the street targeting an officer, which resulted in the shooting. The suspect was hit with gunfire, fell to the ground and was arrested without further escalation. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics tended to Callier at the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital where his condition is currently stable.

Fortunately, Neither officers nor other civilians were injured during the incident. Investigators recovered a five-inch serrated kitchen knife at from the scene, it has been booked as evidence. Investigations into this incident continue under the guidance of the Force Investigation Division investigators.
