The LAPD is currently probing a series of sexual assaults reported in Koreatown, conducted by the now-imprisoned suspect, Matthew Scott Reyes. Their official news release solicits further victims and witnesses to help clarify these incidents' full span, as per LAPD Newsroom.
The first assualt report came in on September 29 from a 20-year-old woman. Reyes allegedly kidnapped and sexually assaulted her near 3rd Street and Western Avenue. Reyes was recognizable, his long hair pulled into a ponytail, the tip dyed red.
A passerby played an instrumental role in Reyes' apprehension. He successfully detained Reyes but incurred injuries, after which the LAPD assumed custody of Reyes. They then quickly linked him to other sexual assault cases in the area.
Since Reyes was a security guard by profession, it is suspected he used his role to ensnare victims.
After in-depth scrutiny, the District Attorney's office of Los Angeles County lodged six felony charges against Reyes on October 6, including rape, forced oral copulation, and robbery—two counts each. Currently, Reyes is in custody with a bail of $1.5 million. Although three victims have been identified so far, officials suspect more victims may have yet to file a report.
In a public statement, LAPD Detective Asia Hodge, one of the investigators on the case, urged any other victims to come forward, claiming that the risk of retaliation has diminished since Reyes' arrest, as mentioned by LAPD Newsroom.
The LAPD asks anyone with relevant information that could reveal more victims or witnesses contact their Operations-West Bureau, Special Assault Section, at (213) 473-0447. Tips are also accepted through LA Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477) or the “P3 Tips” mobile application.
