Yesterday, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office declared that Shawn Hernandez of Long Beach was given a 17-year prison sentence for participating in residential burglary and felony conspiracy. This followed a series of events beginning earlier this year, on January 9 with the trial ending on August 1, as mentioned by the Ventura County DA.

According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s report, Hernandez and undisclosed co-conspirators attempted to invade a Township Avenue home in Simi Valley approximately at 2:15 a.m. They tragically shattered a rear glass sliding door. Despite the chaos, the homeowner quickly dialed 9-1-1, and the Simi Valley Police arrived in time to see a Dodge Charger leaving the scene. Simultaneously, Hernandez and his accomplices were left stranded which led police on a high-speed chase resulting in a crash. The only suspect found at the scene, Karenga Williams, pled guilty to attempted first-degree residential burglary and evading an officer. By June, he received a one-year-and-eight-month prison sentence.

In the aftermath of the arrest, police found evidence close to the victim's home, including Hernandez's personal identification information alongside various items linked with burglary like a ski mask, gloves, and a bag found in a neighboring yard. A DNA match was found on a glove belonging to Shawn Hernandez and Uber records validated his commute between South Los Angeles and Simi Valley, confirming his criminal intent.

Deputy District Attorney Matthew Hovsepian of the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office Serious-Violent Felonies Unit prosecuted the case. He highlighted the necessity of maintaining a safe environment for Ventura County residents, praising the efforts of the Simi Valley Police in achieving the conviction.
