On Orkin's annual list of America's "rattiest" cities, several California metropolises, including Los Angeles, appear in the top 50. Los Angeles rides up to the second position this year, outperforming last year's ranking, with San Francisco, San Diego, and Sacramento placed fifth, 28th, and 33rd respectively says KTLA.

Despite Chicago retaining its position as the city with the highest rodent infestations in the United States for the ninth year running, Los Angeles's shift up the ranking represents a growing rat issue in California reports Orkin. These rankings utilize data from the number of new rodent services rendered in these cities, showcasing the escalating measures taken by residents and businesses to tackle such invasions.

Orkin's report suggests that colder temperatures during autumn and winter encourage rodents to seek warmth and nourishment indoors, resulting in an incursion into an estimated 21 million homes across the country as cited. As Orkin's entomologist, Ben Hottel details, a delay to directly dealing with rodent incursions can lead to considerable damage to property and even become carriers of diseases like Hantavirus, Leptospirosis, and Monkeypox, that threaten human health, according to KTLA.

In places like Olvera Street in Los Angeles, merchants report rodent invasions damaging their business operations. Shared videos reveal rats scavenging for food on streets, sidewalks, and under vendor carts, as reported by KTLA

Among their recommendations is to store food in tightly sealed metal or glass containers, keeping living spaces tidy, monitoring both indoors and outdoors for rodent droppings and other infestation signs, sealing off any cracks and holes in buildings, and the installation of weather strips around entryways as per Orkin's advice.
