The search for Sophia Lorraine Garcia, an at-risk individual, has widened across Los Angeles County. Garcia, who suffers from both mental health issues and diabetes, was last seen earlier this month, on October 6, in Norwalk, according to the report of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
She is 39 years old, Hispanic, 5'00", 170 lbs, with brown hair and eyes and was seen wearing a black "Led Zeppelin" shirt, grey sweatpants, and blue shoes.
In the U.S., mental health issues and chronic illnesses frequently go hand in hand. The National Institute of Mental Health, around 21.6% of adults in 2020 experienced some mental illness, while 5.2% dealt with a serious disorder. Mental health crises may not always result in extreme situations such as a missing individual, but the effects lack of support and social stigma can cause severe difficulties in coping.
For Sophia Lorraine Garcia's case, her family's distress illustrates the need for an improved response to such challenges. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department invites any information about Garcia to be reported to the Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477) or lacrimestoppers.org.
