Yesterday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted according to a motion put by Supervisor Janice Hahn, to establish an LGBTQ+ Community Resource Center in Whittier. An official press release, announced the center's aim to transform a Vacant County building into a hub for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies in the region.
The center, funded by a $4.2 million state grant acquired by Assemblymember Lisa Calderon, will be driving partnerships with organizations such as the Los Angeles Centers for Alcohol and Drug Abuse. This serves as a testament to the County's commitment to promote inclusion and understanding within the community.
Being more than just symbolic, the Resource Center is set to provide a suite of services for the LGBTQ+ community inclusive of mental health treatment, legal assistance, educational workshops, and advocacy initiatives. Additionally, its plan to encourage volunteer opportunities and display culture-rich programs exemplifies the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals to the society.
The 2,694 square-foot, single-story building located at 7639 Painter Avenue, will host the center starting early 2024. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the venue has been vacant. This ample space will be occupied by the center offering its essential set of services meant to redress the unique experiences and struggles encountered by LGBTQ+ members.
The establishment of this center embeds following a challenging period for the LGBTQ+ community which had been historically sidelined. The myriad services and initiatives that the center promises to provide, is a manifestation to the challenges faced by the superior society, and underlines the need for targeted support and assistance.
The Center's plan, to engage with local institutes, businesses, and faith communities furthers their goal of not only aiding those who are directly facing discrimination, but also involves the larger community in fostering greater understanding, and inclusivity for all. The anticipation for this overarching approach is profound, indicating that it could have a transformative impact on the LGBTQ+ community and the society overall.
The Whittier LGBTQ+ Community Resource Center projects a tide in society towards fostering an environment of understanding and acceptance. Assemblymember Calderon, a key influence behind this initiative, underlined the necessity of establishing safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community across the region, according to the recent statement.
