The city of Malibu and Los Angeles County are under a Red Flag warning until tomorrow, due to strong Santa Ana winds and extremely low humidity, conditions that significantly increase the risk of wildfires. Residents are advised to prepare for possible evacuations, power outages, and unsafe road conditions as a result, according to Malibu Red Flag Warning.
Caution is advised when approaching littered intersections due to fallen branches and broken traffic signals. The risk of wildfires could potentially persist into Tuesday.
In anticipation of the above hazardous conditions, augmented staffing is already in place by the Los Angeles County Fire Department in Malibu and surrounding areas. Several departments are coordinating for public safety, including LA County Fire, Sheriff's Departments, Caltrans, and LA County Public Works. Southern California Edison (SCE), has warned of a potential Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) on the Cuthbert and Serra Circuits in Malibu starting early Sunday, as per Malibu City SCE Warning.
All teams involved in assuring public safety are engaging with susceptible populations, such as the homeless in Malibu. These efforts are to ensure they are aware of fire prevention procedures and are ready for potential evacuations. Public Works teams patrol roads to monitor hazards, debris, and fallen power lines. The Malibu CERT Team, in concert with the City, plan to set up an Emergency Information Station at Zuma Beach in the event of widespread power outages.
During this time, staying regularly informed is essential. Residents should monitor local AM and FM radio, follow weather updates from the National Weather Service, and sign up for LA County emergency alerts. The City of Malibu will provide emergency alerts as required and post all emergency information on its website.
