On Friday, October 6, Ana Jasmine Vaca-Velazquez from Moorpark admitted to her charge of felony automobile insurance fraud.

According to the case documents, Vaca-Velazquez had an insurance policy coverage for her vehicle through Mercury Insurance in December 2019. This policy, however, didn't include her husband, José Castro. When Castro was involved in a collision on December 2, 2019, Vaca-Velazquez filed a false claim, incorrectly asserting that she was the driver during the incident. Subsequent investigations by both Mercury Insurance and the California Department of Insurance led to the recognition of the claim as fraudulent.

According to Senior Deputy District Attorney Mike Frawley during the trial, auto insurance fraud carries a punishment of up to five years in county jail and a fine of $50,000, or twice the fraudulent amount, whichever amounts to more.
