The Orange County Sheriff's Department is set to introduce an operation targeting distracted driving in Mission Viejo. This operation, which commences on Friday, October 27, aims to deter drivers from using mobile phones while driving, as per news release. Funding for the operation comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In California, the penalties for distracted driving are significant. The state's cell phone law imposes a $162 fine for first-time violators and at least $285 for repeat offenders.
Distracted driving, particularly cellular devices, remains a pervasive and deadly issue. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data reveals that in 2021, 3,522 deaths occurred due to distracted driving.
Mitigating distractions while driving, such as silencing cell phones, pre-setting GPS systems, or storing personal belongings away, can enhance safety. If a driver needs to take a call or update navigation, he or she is advised to pull over to a safe location first.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department's forthcoming enforcement operation underlines the repercussions of distracted driving, and offers a glimpse of ongoing efforts to ensure maximum highway safety.
