The Riverside County Department of Waste Resources will conduct a free household hazardous-waste collection event this coming weekend in the Corona City Hall parking lot. The event, available to all residents of Riverside County, aims to facilitate the removal of hazardous waste materials from county's landfills and to ensure their proper management, according to their recent news release.
Improper disposal of waste can negatively affect both the environment and public health. As per the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), discarding hazardous waste in a landfill or into a storm drain, can potentially contaminate water, soil, and air, posing risks to our communities, as noted by the EPA.
Last year, Riverside County led several similar events to actively encourage the safe disposal of hazardous waste materials. This year, local authorities are hoping for increased resident participation, contributing towards a sustainable future.
Per the specifications detailed in the news release, items accepted at the event include used motor oil, paint, antifreeze, household and automotive batteries, pesticides, cleaning products, sharps, unused medications (excluding controlled substances), and electronic waste such as televisions, computers, VCRs, and telephones. Notably, materials from businesses or non-profits will not be taken as clarified in the same news release.
Residents have to abide by the 15-gallon or 125-pound limit of materials per vehicle, to properly dispose. Individual containers should not exceed five gallons or 50 pounds. Certain items, such as explosives, radioactive materials, ammunition, asbestos, large compressed-gas cylinders, and certain medical waste are excluded from the collection.
While the event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday in Corona City Hall's parking lot, it is subject to be cancelled due to bad weather or other hazardous situations.
